Where to put a guinea pig cage in your house
The best spot for a guinea pig cage: which rooms work, what to avoid (sun, draughts, heaters, noise), and whether a cage should sit on the floor or on a table.
Put a guinea pig cage in a busy, well-ventilated family room with a steady temperature, ideally 18–23°C. Keep it out of direct sun and away from windows, heaters, air-con vents, external doors, loud speakers and steamy rooms. A cage raised to table height is warmer, avoids draughts and is easier to clean.
Where you put the cage affects your guinea pigs’ temperature, health, stress levels and how friendly they become. It’s worth planning before you set up, because a big cage is hard to move later.
The best rooms for a guinea pig cage
Living rooms, family rooms and open-plan dining areas are usually the best choice, because:
- The temperature stays fairly steady.
- Guinea pigs get used to people, voices and daily noise, and become more confident and social.
- You’ll see them several times a day and notice quickly if one stops eating or seems unwell.
- They’ll hear the fridge. Many owners find their pigs start “wheeking” for veggies at the sound of the fridge door or a plastic bag.
Guinea pigs are social herd animals. A cage tucked away in a spare room or the garage can leave them lonely and nervous.

Floor or table: how high should the cage be?
Raised (table or stand)
- Warmer, and away from floor draughts
- Easier on your back for daily spot-cleaning
- Guinea pigs feel safer when people aren't looming over them
- Out of reach of dogs and toddlers
On the floor
- Easy to set up big C&C cages and playpens
- No risk of the cage being knocked off a stand
- Needs a secure lid if you have cats or dogs
- Can be draughty on cold tiles in winter
If you put a big C&C cage on a table, make sure the table is sturdy and wide enough for the whole base. A pair needs at least 1 m² of floor, so a 2 × 4 grid cage (about 71 × 142 cm) needs a big table or a purpose-built stand. See the cage size guide.
Temperature and light
- Temperature: aim for a steady 18–23°C. Guinea pigs handle cool rooms better than hot ones. In summer, a room that stays cool is more important than one that’s convenient. See the summer heat guide and the winter guide.
- Light: bright, indirect daylight and a normal day–night rhythm are ideal. Avoid rooms where lights are on late every night.

Living with other pets and children
- Cats and dogs: use a cage with a secure lid or walls they can’t jump over, and never leave them alone with your guinea pigs. Even a gentle dog smells like a predator.
- Young children: a raised cage, or a room kids only enter with an adult, prevents accidental injuries and escapes.
Plan for the space you need

It's best not to put it right next to a window. Direct sun through glass can overheat guinea pigs quickly, even in winter, and windows let in cold draughts at night. Bright, indirect light across the room is ideal.
Can I keep my guinea pigs in the garage or laundry?

A laundry can work if it's well ventilated and not steamy or hot from the dryer. Garages are often too hot in summer and too cold in winter, and car exhaust fumes are dangerous. Neither is great long term, because your pigs will be lonely away from the household.
Should a guinea pig cage be on the floor or on a table?

A raised cage is warmer, avoids floor draughts, is easier on your back when cleaning, and makes guinea pigs feel less threatened by people looming over them. A floor cage is fine if the room isn't draughty and pets or small children can't get at it. Floor time in a playpen is a good addition either way.
